Former Indonesian President Megawati Visits Fujian

Between November 4 and 6, a 56-member Indonesian delegation headed by Mrs. Megawati Sukarnoputri, leader of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle and former president of Indonesia, visited Fuzhou. This is Mrs. Megawati’s second visit to Fujian.

On the afternoon of November 5, Secretary Yu Weiguo met the delegation. Mr. Yu set out that enjoying a time-honored friendship. China and Indonesia are natural partners in implementing the Belt and Road Initiative. With the leadership and promotion of the leaders of the two countries, our relations keep growing. In recent years, our economic cooperation and trade grow rapidly, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges become all the more active. Fujian is further deepening reform and opening up to build the core area of the 21st century Maritime Silk Road. It is hoped that through the delegation’s visit, Fujian and Indonesia could consolidate friendship, and enhance cooperation in fields such as trade, business, culture and tourism, thus delivering more benefits to the peoples of the two countries.

Mrs. Megawati recalled her meeting with then Governor Xi Jinping in her first visit to Fujian in 2002. She expressed her admiration for China’s rapid economic and social progress. She said that Indonesia is ready to draw on Fujian's success story of development. Under the Belt and Road Initiative, the two countries could carry out cooperation in more areas so as to achieve common progress.

On the morning of the same day, Mrs. Megawati attended a degree awarding ceremony at Fujian Normal University and received the honorable doctoral degree of that University.

On November 6, Fuzhou Party Secretary Wang Ning met with the delegation. They exchanged views on further cooperation between Fuzhou and Indonesia.
