Min Opera, also known as Fuzhou Opera, is the only existing Chinese opera performed entirely in the Fuzhou dialect. It is popular in central, eastern, and northern Fujian province in eastern China, as well as in Taiwan region of China and Southeast Asia.
Originating in the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), it evolved from the fusion of Yiyang qiang and local folk melodies into what became known as Jianghu diao. In the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Pingjiang troupe, Laolao troupe and Rulin troupe merged to shape the form of modern Min Opera. Following the 1911 Revolution, it entered a golden era, producing numerous troupes and famous performers, such as Zheng Yizou rising to fame as part of the "Four Great Dan (four legendary female-role performers)".
With over 1,000 traditional repertoires, Min Opera draws inspiration from folk tales, historical tales, and classical legends. Representative works include Lady Meng Jiang and Butterfly Lovers. Its music combines boldness and delicacy, featuring original vocal tones and melodies influenced by Yiyang qiang. Instruments such as the suona and erhu are commonly used.
The roles were initially limited to three types – Sheng (the main male role), Dan (the female role) and Chou (the male clown). The opera later developed twelve role types. Performers express the inner world of characters through stylized external movements and gestures.
Min Opera is the foremost of Fujian's five major opera genres, boasting a history of over 400 years. It holds great significance in the evolution of Chinese opera vocal styles and the cultural development of Fuzhou in Fujian province. Yet today, it is in urgent need of preservation.
