Fuzhou Xiaoshan Public Welfare Service Center, together with Furui community, visited elderly residents' households across the community before the Double Ninth Festival, also known as Chongyang Festival, which is a traditional occasion to honor and show respect for the elderly.

Taiwan volunteers went door to door to understand seniors' health conditions, daily routines, and needs.

Based on a comprehensive evaluation and the residents' preferences, four households with mobility-limited members were selected for tailored home modifications.

"These handrails are very practical. My mother can now get up on her own, and we, as her children, feel much more supported," said Chen Yibo, a resident of Furui community, Taijiang district, as volunteers installed senior-friendly home modifications.

"The key is adaptation. Every adjustment must meet the seniors' actual needs," noted Lin Jiemin, a volunteer. "Even small details, such as the height and angle of handrails, require precise on-site measurement and calibration to ensure elderly residents can use them with minimal effort and maximum safety."

Among the households, Ms Yang, who will celebrate her 100th birthday next month, is being cared for daily by her children, both in their late seventies. Volunteers specially adjusted the bedside handrails and installed a wireless call device near the bed for night-time assistance.

As a resettlement community with a high proportion of elderly residents, Furui community was recently recognized as a "National Age-friendly Model Community", providing an ideal platform to advance senior-friendly home modifications.
